Iron Man’s heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame holds profound implications for a Phase Five Marvel character’s origin story, infusing it with an undeniable undercurrent of sadness. Since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the landmark film Iron Man of 2008, Tony Stark, portrayed by the incomparable Robert Downey Jr., swiftly ascended to the ranks of the franchise’s central figures. From his charismatic ingenuity to his undeniable wit, Stark became an indelible presence, one of the pillars upon which the entire cinematic universe was built.
In the climactic battle of Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark made the ultimate sacrifice, using the formidable power of the six Infinity Stones to destroy Thanos and his evil army. His selfless act saved the universe but cost him his life. It is a moment that will go down in the annals of the MCU. Even after his passing, Tony Stark’s legacy as Iron Man continued to have a significant impact on the MCU. His profound influence even extended to his young pupil Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man, as wonderfully portrayed by Tom Holland. The Dominique Thorne-played Ironheart Riri Williams, whose history is inextricably entwined with Tony Stark’s legacy, likewise adopted this torch-bearing duty. But the gloomy shadow of Tony’s touching departure sends ripples of sadness onto the canvas of her MCU origin story, a testament to the enduring impact of the man who was once Iron Man.

A teenage engineering and technology genius who creates her own version of Iron Man’s suit, Riri Williams made her Marvel Comics debut in issue seven of Invincible Iron Man vol. three, which was published in May 2016. When Tony Stark learns of this, he mentors Riri, inspiring her to transform into the superheroine Ironheart. Wakanda Forever modifies several aspects of Riri’s origin story by making her an older MIT student, which is effective in bringing her into the MCU, although it is still impacted by Tony Stark’s passing.
Since Tony already lost his life battling Thanos, Riri is more likely to learn from him indirectly as she watches both his technological accomplishments with Stark Industries and his heroism as Iron Man. Sadly, Riri herself will never have the long-standing mentor-student relationship that Spider-Man and Tony had thanks to Avengers: Endgame in her MCU story. For Riri’s MCU debut, this setup still works nicely.
